Victoria Falls Holidays

One of the most awe inspiring and spectacular sights in all of Africa is Victoria Falls. Both the park encompassing the falls and the city of Victoria Falls are excellent vacation destinations for all ages and types of holiday travellers.

The falls themselves have been eroding and cutting through cracks in the area's basalt crust for over 2,000 years, and in that time the waters have created a stunning gorge to go along with the gorgeous waterfall. If you go in the rainy season, the falls will be engorged with water, spilling over in such huge volumes that visitors are bound to get wet if they choose to explore the trails in and around the falls. The down side to this time of year is that the huge amount of water makes it difficult to see the falls themselves. To get a good look at the geology of the falls, think about going during the dry season when you can see the underlying ledge and structure of the falls. Be assured, though, that Victoria Falls Park is open all year and is a wonderful destination no matter what time of year you choose to go.

Victoria Falls is an historic place, first viewed by the European missionary and explorer Dr. David Livingstone. A local tribal chief took him out into the Zambezi River just above the falls to a small island, where Livingstone was almost overcome with awe at the sight before him. This island, now known as Livingstone Island, is still accessible to visitors during the dry season. The view is spectacular so be sure to take your camera!

There are no overnight accommodations or eating establishments in the park itself, which is one of the reasons why it remains so pristine and beautiful. Most visitors to the park actually stay in the city of Victoria Falls, located just outside of the park boundaries. There you will find a number of excellent hotels, as well as some that offer more than just a place to sleep at night. For instance, the Drifter Inn Victoria Falls is a peaceful place to stay and is connected to the falls by a very nice walking trail. From the front door of the inn to the falls themselves takes only about twenty minutes or so. Even closer to the falls is the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, boasting safari style décor, excellent food, and a bustling casino for entertainment.

Visitors will find plenty to do in and around Victoria Falls. You might take a river cruise upstream from the falls themselves, which is a beautiful and memorable experience. Other terrific activities include white water rafting, a sunset ride on a steam train, or a helicopter flight directly over the falls themselves. For the more adventurous holiday traveller, consider going on the Wild Horizons Elephant Back Safari or exploring the Wild Horizons Wildlife Sanctuary and Orphanage.

The best way to reach Victoria Falls Park is through Zimbabwe. There are a number of flights into and out of the city of Victoria Falls from other locations such as Johannesburg, Windhoek, and Harare. It is also possible to get there from Zambia, but this is generally not recommended for tourists because travel there is not as safe or reliable as in Zimbabwe. There is also an excellent road from the Beit Bridge in South Africa that will take you on a scenic drive up the Victoria Falls.

When it comes to visiting Africa, spending time at Victoria Falls should be considered as part of every holiday traveller's itinerary. It is an opportunity to see one of nature's most spectacular sights and experience a part of the continent that is famous throughout the world.
