Singapore is a brilliant holiday destination. It represents a wonderful mixture of Asian influences from China, Malaysia, India, and more. Originally founded by the British as a trading colony, this island state achieved its independence and launched on the road to becoming one of the most prosperous and vibrant countries in the world. Its cultural diversity merges with its modern vibrancy to create a place where every visitor can find plenty of activities and interests to fill their holiday time.

True to its history as a centre of trade, Singapore is home to the busiest sea port in the world. It is an island nation, but is also connected to Malaysia by several modern bridges. Many travellers prefer using Singapore as their primary entry point into the Asian continent because of the plentiful travel choices and easy access to other parts of the region. It is so exceptional and lively, however, that a large number of such travellers decide to spend a few days exploring Singapore before heading out on the rest of their itinerary.

Sometimes referred to as the "Switzerland" of Asia, Singapore is known as a relatively safe and prosperous respite for people from throughout the continent who are looking for success. It offers many chances to achieve this success, thanks to the diversity of its people, the robust business environment, and the convergence of energy and ideas all in one place. While Singapore is recognised as a modern international centre, it is also recognised as a city with some of the most restrictive laws around for the purpose of regulating the society. For instance, it is illegal to spit, chewing gum is only available from a licensed pharmacy, and alcohol is both expensive and frowned upon.

Despite these issues, however, Singapore is experiencing rapid growth as a tourist destination. This is not surprising, considering the terrific variety of sights and activities available for exploration. For instance, as an island nation it offers some wonderful beaches; there are many opportunities to see and experience the native wildlife and natural beauty of the island; it boasts some of the best shopping in the world; the history and cultural diversity are quite astonishing to learn about and explore; and much, much more.

Because of its tremendous diversity of people with a broad range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, there is nearly always something going on in Singapore. For instance, the country celebrates holidays and festivals important to Christians, Muslims, Indians, and Chinese segments of the population. From the Chinese New Year to the Hindu Festival of Lights to Eid-ul-Adha to Christmas Day and more, there are many opportunities to experience and enjoy traditions and customs from many different perspectives.

The cuisine of Singapore is also varied thanks to its cultural diversity, with many fine restaurants serving many different kinds of food. Along the eastern coast of the country you will find a wonderful array of seafood choices, while in Kampong Glam you will find traditional Malaysian and Arabian cuisine. And of course, the Chinatown and Little India areas are famous for serving authentic foods from their respective countries.

If shopping is your passion then Singapore is your little slice of heaven. Be sure to spend time along Orchard Road, where you will find a dense concentration of stores, shops, boutiques, and the like. To get a taste of typical shopping opportunities preferred by local residents, head to Bugis and explore some authentic Singaporean shopping opportunities.

Getting to Singapore is easiest and most convenient by air, primarily via Changi International Airport. This is an extremely large and busy complex, so allow plenty of time to get through the crowds and find your terminal/gate. Getting into Singapore from the airport is possible via subway, taxi, shuttle, and the like. Check with your hotel in advance because many of the larger properties offer complimentary or deeply discounted transportation options for their guests.
