Say the name "Orlando" and what's the first thing that pops into your mind? Most likely it's theme parks, shopping, and a whole lot of sunshine. While these are certainly a big part of what makes Orlando such a great holiday destination, there are plenty of other terrific sights and activities to enjoy while you're there.

Let's start with theme parks, because they are perhaps the most famous in the entire world. The assortment of theme parks is dominated by Disney World, which is really a collection of several different theme park choices. These choices include Epcot Centre, The Magic Kingdom, Disney's Animal Kingdom, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Typhoon Lagoon, and Blizzard Beach. While Disney World is not located inside the Orlando city limits proper, it is a huge part of the city's obvious appeal.

There are a number of non-Disney theme parks as well, such as Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Adventure Park, Wet 'N Wild, Discovery Cove, Gatorland, and more. Of these attractions, two of the most interesting and unique are Discovery Cove and Gatorland. At Discovery Cove, they limit the number of visitors allowed in each day, but it is well worth the effort to obtain tickets because you get the chance to swim with dolphins and experience their magnificence up close. Gatorland is much smaller and less expensive, but is a wonderful attraction to visit with children of all ages. Take a walk through the exploration trails, see the trainers feed the gators, watch one of the outdoor shows featuring trainers and gators, and much more. It is truly one of the best theme park values in Orlando!

Golf is another extremely popular activity for visitors to Orlando, and there is a wide variety of courses available for a wide variety of skill levels and budgets. Cypress Creek Country Club, Faldo Golf Institute, Fairways Country Club, and Lake Orlando Golf Club are just a few tempting examples. One of the things Orlando is very well known for, however, is its many amazing miniature golf facilities. They are not just mini golf courses, however; they are truly works of art and much like theme parks all by themselves. It's a great way to spend a few hours with the entire family, especially on a warm evening.

Downtown Orlando is a vibrant and exciting place where you can easily spend several days exploring and enjoying. There are theatres, concert halls, restaurants, dance clubs, bistros, boutiques, shopping areas, and much more. Most of the action is centred along Orange Avenue, but the general downtown area is always where something is happening. Be sure to stop by Lake Eola while you're there to enjoy the beautiful park surrounding the lake and the elegant swans who life there. You can even rent a paddle boat shaped like a swan for a lovely opportunity to get out on the lake itself.

The largest airport serving the area is Orlando International Airport; the other major airport is Orlando-Sanford International Airport. In general, the latter airport is much less busy, easier to navigate, and offers a much greater number of international flights from Europe, particularly the UK. Another popular alternative is to arrive at Tampa International Airport and spend some time along the Gulf Coast before turning eastward toward Orlando.

If you do choose to fly into Orlando International Airport, you will find a number of excellent choices for transportation into the city. There you will find perhaps the largest number of shuttle services available anywhere, most of which are quite reasonably priced. There is also an efficient bus system as well. Taxi service is readily available, but be careful if you are taking one out to the theme park areas because the greater distance will make this option more expensive in most cases.
