New York Holidays

New York is a city that has been immortalised countless times in music, literature, dance, and a wealth of other forms. It is known variously as "the big apple", "the city that never sleeps", and "the city of the world", just to name a few. But whatever name you choose to call it, this is one city where visitors can spend plenty of time exploring a huge array of sights, attractions, and history. The performing arts are particularly strong in New York, most famously in the many theatres on Broadway and off-Broadway.

Famous landmarks are located throughout the city; they are so plentiful, in fact, that you could easily spend an entire vacation just visiting them all. For instance, the Statue of Liberty is world famous for welcoming generations of immigrants to the United States and is a major tourist destination all by itself. Due to increased security restrictions visiting the site requires advance reservations and a few extra processes, but it is well worth the extra effort to experience the Statue of Liberty up close.

Another extraordinary place to visit is Central Park, located in the very heart of the city. You might find it strange to see such a lush expanse of grass, trees, walking paths, and other outdoor facilities in a city as big as New York, but the founders of the city understood the tremendous value of incorporating open space and parks for the future. Central Park is a popular tourist destination for picnics, riding bikes, enjoying a ride in a horse-drawn carriage, or simply relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet. Also located in Central Park are the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as the world famous Central Park Zoo.

The Empire State Building is one of the earliest of the modern landmarks in New York, as it is perhaps the most famous building in the city. Visitors can ride to the top of the building and soak up the tremendous views from the observation deck. The lines can be quite long and the observation deck quite crowded during the daytime and during peak tourist season, but it is much easier to get up to the top at night when there are fewer people around.

At the World Trade Centre Site you can experience the raw power and emotion of the location where the September 11th terrorist attacks occurred. Visitors can walk around the site to get a feel for the enormity of the tragedy and take in the numerous plaques and remembrances that commemorate that shocking day. Although it can be a bit intimidating to visit a site where so much destruction occurred, it is something that most people describe as well worth it when they are finished.

New York is home to the most important financial centres of the world, including the New York Stock Exchange. This is where the world's money and financial experts converge to choose investments and keep the world economy on the move. Visitors can observe trading activity on the floor (which can be intense) on most days, but increased security restrictions may result in sudden closure of the visitor observation areas.

Everyone loves the holiday season, and New York is famous for the holiday spirit and decorations found each year in Rockefeller Plaza. Here you will find some of the city's best restaurants and shopping areas, along with the world famous skating rink and Christmas tree during the holiday season. It is a bustling place all year long and should be on your list of sights to experience while in New York.

Travel to and from New York is easy and convenient by air, thanks to the close proximity of three major airports. John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International airport are the most commonly used facilities for international travellers, and for connecting flights or domestic flights there is LaGuardia Airport. All three of these airports offer many transportation choices for getting into the city, including shuttles, trains, public transit, taxis, and more.
