One of the most modern and enterprising cities in all of Italy, Milan has managed to become a thriving part of the modern world without losing its historical charm or heritage. Perhaps best known as one of the world's fashion capitals, it is also home to terrific shopping, hearty nightlife, and some of the best arts and cultural attractions in the entire country.

Many people are surprised at the full extent of the historical attractions in and around Milan. This is the city where you will find the very oldest churches in Italy, which runs contrary to what most people think. Most people think Rome is where the oldest churches are located, but they are actually in Milan because it was once the capital city. The main cathedral in Milan is called The Duomo, and it began construction in the late 1200's. The spires and façade are world famous, and many visitors especially enjoy going up on the roof to soak up the amazing city views from up there.

Saint Mary of the Graces is another world famous church located in Milan, due in large part to its being the home of Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper" painting. As you can imagine, this is an extremely popular tourist destination for visitors and scholars alike and the crowds can be quite large. For this reason, visits to the church require advance tickets; if you plan to visit during peak tourist season you may actually have to reserve your tickets several months ahead of time.

There are plenty of historic monuments located in and around Milan as well, and one of the best of them is Chiaravalle Abbey. This is a medieval abbey that is particularly well preserved and easily accessible to visitors. In fact, it is still an active abbey run by monks who are most happy to share with visitors and help them get the most out of their time at Chiaraville Abbey.

You simply cannot go to Milan without spending some time shopping. Whether you are a serious "power" shopper looking to fill several suitcases or just a "casual" shopper wanting to enjoy the ambiance and spectacle of Milan, there is plenty of opportunity for you in several locations across Milan. The most famous shopping area is the Fashion Quadrangle, where you will find the main shops for nearly every major designer label in existence. If you are looking for something a bit more reasonably priced then head to Vercelli Avenue, Porta Ticinese, or Buenos Aires Avenue. There is even a newer outlet-type shopping centre located about an hour away from Milan in Serravalle Scrivia; numerous tour operators offer complete shopping packages to and from this amazing place.

Food is always an integral part of visiting Italy, and Milan is no exception. There you will find a huge array of traditional and local foods, as well as numerous restaurants featuring Chinese, Mexican, French, and even American style foods. Unless you have been in Italy for a while and need a break from Italian food, it's best to stick with more traditional offerings. One unique thing about Italian eateries is that each one will offer some unique dish all its own. You can experience Italy in an entirely new way by trying the unique offerings of each Milan restaurant you visit.

Travel to and from Milan is convenient thanks to multiple international air carriers and two major international airports. Both Linate International Airport and Malpensa International Airport allow you to connect with flights from all over the world. Once on the ground you can get to Milan itself via express trains, buses, taxis, and various shuttles. Another popular way to reach Milan is to arrive elsewhere in Italy and then take a scenic rail trip from there to Milan. Either way, you are bound to thoroughly enjoy Milan and take home many wonderful memories from your time spent there.
