Luxembourg Holidays

Luxembourg is both a city and an independent country, and is in fact the second smallest member state in the European Union. The city of Luxembourg is a diverse and interesting place, home to a broad population that include people literally from all over the world. Up to half of the residents of the city at any given time are from a foreign country. This creates a wonderful mixture of cultures and exciting opportunities to interact with a huge range of people from other countries and parts of the world.

Within the city of Luxembourg there are many wonderful bike paths, parks, shops, and cafes. It is easy to rent a bike from any number of reputable vendors, making it easy to explore the city at your own pace and in a way that is simply not possible from inside of a car or a bus. Pick up your lunch at one of the many wonderful cafes and have a picnic in a lush, green park. Or, explore the plentiful small shops located up and down the streets of Luxembourg to find unique and high quality items.

Luxembourg is famous for the Chemin de la Corniche, a promenade set aside for pedestrians that traverses the city and allows visitors to take in many wonderful sights along the way. It is sometimes called "Europe's most beautiful balcony" and indeed it is a well deserved name because there is simply no other like it anywhere else. Another terrific walking tour is the Wenzel Walk that takes you through the oldest and most historic parts of Luxembourg, showing you the amazing sights and sounds of this historic section of town.

Another important part of history that is central to Luxembourg is the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. This famous battle in the Ardennes was a turning point in the war and plays a large role in the recent modern history of Luxembourg. The National Museum of Military History is an excellent resource to learn about the battle as well as other notable and important events that occurred in or near Luxembourg during the war.

Going back several centuries, a very interesting location to visit are the Bock Casemates. These are a complex network of fortifications that exist entirely underground. The passageways date back as far as 1644 and at one point wound over fourteen miles through the underground of the city. It is truly an amazing and massive place to visit and well worth setting aside a few hours to explore. Another interesting historic attraction is Useldange, a scenic and beautiful castle surrounded by incredibly lush and vibrant grounds.

For the wine enthusiast there is no better place to visit than Luxembourg, thanks to the nearby Moselle Valley and the many wonderful wines produced there. From the city it is easy to take day trips out into wine country to sample world class wines, or you can choose to stay in the city and taste a wide array of locally produced wines in one of the many excellent restaurants or cafes. The area is best known for excellent white wines such as Pinot Gris, Reisling, Rivaner, and Auxerrois, so there is sure to be something for every wine lover to enjoy along the way.

Flying into and out of Luxembourg is relatively easy via the Luxembourg-Findel International Airport. Most major European carriers serve this airport with a large assortment of flights from other major cities across the continent. Another alternative to consider is flying into the Brussels South Charleroi Airport and then taking one of several excellent shuttle services into Luxembourg. If you are starting out in another part of Europe you might want to consider taking one of several international trains that travel to Luxembourg from other major cities such as Brussels and Paris.
