The population in the greater Los Angeles area is the second largest in the United States and it represents a stunning mix of people literally from all over the world. Los Angeles is a major port city and centre of international trade, as well as a large centre for global business and media. There is one thing for certain; you will never be bored while exploring Los Angeles!
Starting with the historical sights and attractions, go straight to El Pueblo, which is also sometimes called Olvera Street. Located in the very heart of Los Angeles, it is where the original Spanish mission founding Los Angeles was located. The oldest building in Los Angeles is also in this area and is open for visitors to explore and enjoy. In the area immediately surrounding these terrific sites you will find some of the best Mexican food in the city as well as some terrific shopping opportunities. Union Station is there as well, which is another historic site that also serves as the primary railroad hub for the metropolitan area.
The Page Museum at La Brea Discoveries is a real life paleontological site where scientists and academics alike are actively engaged in digging out fossils and learning more about the way Los Angeles looked as far back as 40,000 years ago. Visitors can explore the museum for many hours, watching the palaeontologists at work and seeing the seeping tar pits for themselves. It is truly a once in a lifetime experience that is not to be missed when you are in the Los Angeles area.
Of course, if you go to Los Angeles you have to go to the worldwide centre of the entertainment industry. This is the television and movie production capital of the world and there are plenty of opportunities to see the inner workings of the industry for yourself. Universal Studios is an extremely popular attraction where you can see how TV and movies are made and walk through some of the actual sets and backdrops from productions you'll certainly recognize and remember.
Another "must see" part of Los Angeles is Hollywood Boulevard, especially the Walk of Fame and the legendary handprints and footprints surrounding Grauman's Chinese Theatre. There is no other place like it, where you can walk the same sidewalks as your favourite movie stars and touch their real life handprints in person. Mulholland Drive is another famous and scenic area, which you will probably recognise from the movies. If you want to truly experience the glitz and glamour of Hollywood then take one of many guided tours that wind their way through some of the most exclusive neighbourhoods and past the home of some of your favourite stars.
Getting to and from Los Angeles is easy and convenient by air. Most people travel through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), but there are at least five other airports located close enough to the city that are convenient alternatives for travellers. All major international air carriers serve LAX, and many also serve one or more of the other airports as well. Getting into the city from the airport is convenient via bus, taxi, and airport shuttle service, but if you plan to do a lot of exploring while you are there then consider hiring a rental car. Traffic is notoriously intense in Los Angeles, but with a good map and some common sense you can go just about anywhere you want with little or no hassle.
