This is one city you simply cannot pass up when the opportunity arises to visit and explore. It is not only one of the most historic cities in all of Europe, but it is also a bustling centre of modern activity. From shopping to the arts, tourist attractions to traditional pubs and eateries, there is truly a nearly endless array of choices for your consideration.

No person should visit London without a stop at the famous (some would say infamous) Tower Hill. This stunning fortress was originally designed as a royal residence beginning in 1078 and was occupied as such for over 500 years. It continued to have a central role in London history for several more centuries, perhaps most famously for the many people imprisoned, tortured, and executed in the Tower of London. Close by is the Tower Bridge, an astounding bit of engineering and architecture dating back to the Victorian era.

Visitors can explore the Tower of London either via self guided touring or with an exceptionally knowledgeable tour guide dressed in period costume. Once you are finished there, it makes sense to move on to the Tower Bridge Experience where you will find details and historically significant features of the Tower Bridge and its amazing past.

Another extremely popular and worthwhile stop in London is Buckingham Palace, the home of the Queen and at various times other members of the Royal Family as well. Tours occur on a regular basis, with certain parts of the palace accessible only at certain times of the year. It is best to check in advance which rooms and sites are open at the time you plan to be there.

Regardless of the time of year you go, Buckingham Palace is the place to be if you want to see amazing pageantry, tradition, and royal trappings. For instance, the Changing of the Guard is a world famous ceremony filled with history and significance for the monarchy and the people of London. It is well worth lining up a bit early to ensure you get a great vantage point for viewing the entire ceremony.

Westminster Abbey is a wonderful historic site where some of the most famous people and events in history have occurred. For over one thousand years the abbey has been at the core of the monarchy, the city, and the very history of England itself. It is where elaborate coronation ceremonies have been held going all the way back to the year 1066, and continues to serve this critical function in modern times as well. Seventeen former monarchs of England are laid to rest in Westminster Abbey, making it one of the most sacred and honoured places in the entire world.

But there are many other famous people laid to rest in Westminster Abbey from throughout English history. For instance, the renowned poet Geoffrey Chaucer is buried there, as are the author Charles Dickens; the composer George Frederic Handel; the scientist Charles Darwin; the prime minister Sir Winston Churchill; and many, many more.

Two major airports, London Gatwick and London Heathrow, serve the greater London area. Nearly all major international airlines offer flights into one or both of these facilities so finding the right flight to meet your needs is generally quite easy. Once you arrive in London transportation is quite easy as well, thanks to the extensive underground system (The Tube), traditional as well as traditional buses serving multiple routes, taxis, and even commuter ferries operating up and down the Thames River.

With all London has to offer, why not make your travel plans today?
