Kuala Lumpur Holidays

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia, an Asian country with a long history and interesting cultural heritage. Originally a mining village, it has grown and developed into one of the world's least expensive yet hugely entertaining vacation destinations. There truly is something of interest here for holiday travellers regardless of budget or personal preferences.

The city itself is rather large and spread out, so it's best to look at its various areas as separate opportunities for fun and exploration. For instance, in the northern suburbs you will find many of the most well known attractions in Kuala Lumpur, including the Batu Caves and the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia. The Batu Caves were discovered two hundred years ago and since that time have been used as temples by local Hindu priests. The caves are often filled with devout Hindus, especially during the Thaipusam Festival in January and February. Visitors are welcome at the caves, but be aware it is a somewhat rustic experience. You must climb nearly 300 stairs to get to the actual caves, watching out along the way for pesky monkeys that will grab items out of your hands as well as garbage and other items discarded on the stairs. Once in the caves themselves, watch your footing because bat droppings can make some parts slippery at times.

The Forest Research Institute of Malaysia is a fantastic nature reserve and study centre located in an area where the earliest indigenous peoples of Malaysia lived. It is very large reserve, offering visitors wonderful opportunities to walk through a native Malaysian forest and experience the tremendous variety of plants and landscapes found there. The reserve is also home to a vast area of secondary forest, which visitors can explore via one of the four established trails that meander through the forest. For the really adventurous, consider taking the Canopy Walk, a unique opportunity to see the forest from about thirty metres in the air. It is an elevated walkway about 200 metres in length that is nothing short of spectacular. The number of people allowed on the Canopy Walk each day is limited, so it is best to make reservations in advance.

To go along with the lush beauty and stunning landscapes of the countryside, Kuala Lumpur proper is well known as a shopper's paradise. There are plentiful opportunities to explore markets, boutiques, outdoor shops, and so much more. The Golden Triangle, located just northeast of the city's central area, is famous for its assortment of shopping malls, vibrant nightlife, and many of the city's highly rated hotels. For a more traditional shopping experience, head slightly west to Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, a popular and extremely colourful marketplace and shopping district. There you will find numerous locally owned shops, but also the more modern Plaza GM. This is a vast wholesale marketplace located entirely indoors and offering an estimated 60,000 different items at substantially reduced wholesale prices. Everything from clothing to jewellery to toys to watches and much more can be found at Plaza GM.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is one of the most modern of its kind in Asia, making it a popular entry point for visitors to the city itself and to others headed to other parts of Malaysia. It is served by over 50 air carriers from throughout the Pacific Rim, Asia, Africa, and Europe. Once you have arrived at the airport, getting into the city proper is relatively easy via the high speed KLIA Ekspres train. Other options include the Airport Coach express bus, the Sepang Omnibus local service, and the Star Shuttle bus. Both Airport Coach and Star Shuttle are easy to navigate and understand, but the Sepang Omnibus service requires a little more patience and ingenuity. The system extends all throughout Kuala Lumpur, but the buses themselves are rather stark and uncomfortable, and the "schedule" is inconsistent at best. Still, it is a safe and reasonably priced way for those with a sense of adventure to get from the airport into the city of Kuala Lumpur.
