Hong Kong is a vital and thriving metropolis with a long, colourful, and engaging history. It first rose to prominence in the mid 1800's when the British took control from China and has remained a centre of world activities and events ever since.

While under the control of the British Empire, Hong Kong developed into a vital location for trade from all areas of East Asia. Its prime location made it an excellent choice because many different trade routes passed within a reasonable distance of Hong Kong. Over the next two centuries it underwent massive growth and change, as Hong Kong became one of the world's leading manufacturing locations. In 1997 the British returned Hong Kong to China, creating an interesting experiment in modern social and economic structures existing right alongside the entrenched communist structures of China. So far the experiment is operating successfully, and Hong Kong remains an extremely popular travel and tourist destination.

There are enough historic sites, scenic attractions, and amazing activities to fill up the itinerary of even the most ambitious of visitors. For instance, the 10,000 Buddhas Monastery is a relatively recent structure (built in the 1950's) that has quickly become one of the most popular attractions in Hong Kong. Inside this interesting complex of buildings and grounds you will find over 12,000 statues of Buddha, ranging from miniature in size to beyond life size. It's a truly astounding sight that visitors remember for many years to come. If something in the Taoist tradition is more to your area of interest then make a point of visiting Ching Chung Koon. This beautiful temple is lovely to look at while also still serving as a practicing Taoist temple.

For a chance to play in the water for a little while, take a trip out to Big Wave Bay. This beach area is very nice and is rarely crowded with lots of people so it is a terrific destination for relaxing and escaping the crowds of Hong Kong proper. What's more, Big Wave Bay is also home to one of only eight rock carvings in Hong Kong dating back to prehistoric times. It is located on the headland formation just above the bay itself.

Of course, one of the most extremely popular activities in Hong Kong is shopping. Why? Because it is what is known as a "free port", meaning there are no tariffs on products sold there. This means Hong Kong is home to some of the very best bargains on all sorts of items literally from all over the world. It's no wonder one of the nicknames for Hong Kong is Shopping Paradise!

There are numerous shopping areas all throughout Hong Kong. Some of the most famous of these bargain hunter's dream districts are Tsim Sha Tsui, Admiralty, Causeway Bay, Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei, and many more. Shopping malls and extensive department stores are also plentiful and easy to find throughout Hong Kong; in fact, many tourism companies offer specific single day or multiple day tours centred completely on these fantastic malls and department stores.

Hong Kong International Airport is a central air hub for all of Asia and is a primary gateway for those travelling on to mainland China. Over sixty international airlines fly in to and out of Hong Kong International, with a huge assortment of direct flights to and from all corners of the world. The public transportation system in and around Hong Kong is excellent and many visitors take full advantage of this convenience by purchasing an economical Octopus card that can be used on buses, trams, and trains as well as at selected fast food restaurants and other convenience outlets. The ferry system is another excellent way to get around to various parts of Hong Kong.

All things considered, a trip to Hong Kong is a truly memorable and unique experience. You should by all means take advantage of the opportunity to go there when it comes your way.
