Most holiday travellers marvel at how perfectly suited Cancun is for vacationers of all kinds, which makes sense because the city was planned from the very start to be a tourist hot spot. The hotel zone alone is filled with a huge assortment of accommodations, from all-inclusive resort hotels to luxury hotels and more. For more affordable options that are just as beautiful and just as terrific for a holiday stay, head more toward the central city of Cancun where you will find plenty of choices to consider.
If you go to Cancun then you can expect to experience some marvellous beaches, crystal clear waters, and plenty of sunshine. Because Cancun is built on a stretch of land shaped much like the number seven it has the unique position of offering beaches facing onto the Caribbean proper as well as beaches facing onto the more sheltered bay facing Isla Mujeres. The sheltered waters are by far the most popular because the water is a bit warmer, the beaches are a bit bigger, and the currents are not nearly as strong. This makes it ideal for swimmers of all skill levels to splash around and enjoy the water.
When you need a break from the beach, there are a number of excellent choices to consider. As strange as it may sound, some of the best bird watching in the area actually happens near the airport. There you will find a wide assortment of native birds and animals living in the forest area surrounding the airport. Mornings are the best time to go because that's when most of the animals are most active.
There are a number of excellent organized tours and activities available as well. For instance, you can take an Aqua Tour on a jet ski or jet boat and spend the day exploring the lagoon area and snorkelling along the reef. You can also swim with dolphins at Wet'n'Wild. Or, if that sounds like too much effort then consider the Lobster Dinner Cruise, a wonderful opportunity for an evening cruise where the food is delicious, the scenery is gorgeous, and you have a chance to meet a wide variety of other people who are there on holiday.
Shopping is another hugely popular activity for holiday travellers, and Cancun is an excellent place to do so. There are a number of different markets scattered throughout the city where vendors offer everything from handmade crafts to souvenirs to food and much more. Perhaps the most well known shopping location in Cancun is at La Isla, an enormous outdoor marketplace located near the major hotel zone. At La Isla you will find a wide array of stores, restaurants, and other offerings to keep you busy for many, many hours.
Cancun International Airport is one of the busiest in Mexico, for obvious reasons. Most major international air carriers offer flights into and out of Cancun from all over the Americas as well as Asia and Europe. Once you arrive on the ground, getting into the city is relatively easy if you have planned in advance and identified a reputable shuttle service such as Gray Line or T.T.A. After clearing customs it is best to head straight for the ticket booth, then claim your luggage and go outside to the shuttle loading area. Beware of people offering "free" transportation or "tourist information", because these are nearly always sales people wanting to corner you into a long presentation about time share condos. If you have any doubts about the best way to get into the city from the airport, go to the official government information centre where you will get the most accurate and up to date information.
