Bahrain Holidays

The Kingdom of Bahrain holds a unique position in the Middle East. It is a Muslim country like others nearby (Qatar, Saudi Arabia, etc.) and across the region, but is unlike other countries in its relative relaxed approach to enforcing the often strict tenets of Islamic law. While its Muslim residents are expected to adhere to these laws, non-Muslim residents and visitors are given much more leeway due to their differing religious beliefs. Because of this, Bahrain has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Middle East and is rapidly becoming the first choice of travellers from around the world looking to experience the Arab culture.

Bahrain has actively promoted itself as a destination where shopping, relaxation, and social activities abound. Its relaxed environment makes it comfortable and hospitable to people of all kinds, ensuring everyone who visits leaves with a lifetime's worth of memories. There is no shortage of things to do in Bahrain, regardless of you interests and preferences.

For those interested in exploring the history and culture of Bahrain, there are three ancient forts open to visitors. These ancient structures date back over 5,000 years and have been carefully restored so visitors can appreciate the history and significance of the area. Access to the forts is free, although actually getting to them can be a challenge due to a scarcity of good signs and markings. Check with your hotel for information about exactly how to find the location you're interested in seeing.

Shopping is the activity for which modern Bahrain is most famous, and one look around at the shops, boutiques, and traditional "souq" sections of cities reveals just how many items can be purchased while there. A souq is a traditional marketplace in the Arab world, home to a huge selection of food, gifts, clothing, arts, crafts, and so much more. Prices area definitely negotiable throughout the souq, and there are many excellent tailors there as well. In fact, many visitors like to take a favourite piece of clothing to one of these tailors and within a few days they will receive back a nearly perfect copy of the item. This is often a less expensive way to add preferred clothing to your wardrobe.

Because Bahrain is made up of several islands in the Persian Gulf, there are of course many opportunities for beach relaxation and water-based activities. Choose from several luxurious beachfront resorts, other mid-range hotels, or budget properties such as cottages and the like. Bahrain is known as one of the most expensive places in the Middle East, so regardless of the type of accommodations you prefer you should expect to pay more than you might expect.

Although Bahrain is socially relaxed in comparison to the rest of the Arab region, this does not mean it is as permissive as Western countries. For instance, alcohol is served in the major hotels but is not available in restaurants or other locations. It is also important to be respectful of Muslim religious and social practices, such as wearing modest clothing (especially women); refraining from public displays of affection such as holding hands or kissing; and generally treating your hosts with the utmost courtesy and esteem.

Bahrain International Airport is the primary arrival point for most visitors. It offers a full range of service from major international air carriers with plenty of flights from Europe and other locations in the Middle East. Getting from the airport to your hotel or other destination is typically easy and convenient. There are many different taxi companies, but be sure to negotiate the price before getting into the vehicle. There is also a relatively good bus system, but the language barrier and understanding the bus route maps is often a problem for visitors. Hiring a car is an excellent alternative, but be sure to familiarise yourself with local driving rules and regulations to avoid problems and frustrations.
