As the capital city of South Australia, it is a fairly populous city at an active centre of arts, culture, and the beach lifestyle. What's more, it is located vary close to several national parks and a number of scenic outdoor regions that provide an excellent alternative for those who want to get out of the city proper for a little while.
If you want to experience the beach lifestyle in Adelaide then head for Glenelg. This is a suburb of the city filled with a rich history of beachside life. Take a walk to the end of the Glenelg Pier, have lunch in the luxurious Grand Hotel, or enjoy a cup of coffee at one of the beach front cafes. Even getting there is fun when you take one of Adelaide's historic tram vehicles from Victoria Square out to Glenelg.
There are a number of high points around Adelaide that offer some spectacular views of the city and the surrounding area. Perhaps the best known of these is Mt. Lofty, from which you can see the city's downtown and business district; the lush plains just outside of the city; Glenelg beaches; and much more. It's a great place to take in the expansive region around Adelaide and also have a delicious lunch or snack at the restaurant located on the summit. You can reach the summit of Mt. Lofty by car during most of the day; however the road up the mountain is closed from the late evening hours overnight to the early morning.
For wine lovers, Adelaide is an especially great place to visit because it is located right in the centre of the surrounding wine country. A wide range of wineries are located within a day's drive or less from the city, allowing holiday travellers plenty of opportunities to sample the local vintages. Even if you aren't interested in checking out more than one or two wineries, it is still well worth the time to explore the wine regions because they are so scenic and beautiful.
Adelaide is an excellent city to visit if you want to experience the native wildlife and foliage of Australia because there are several national parks, conservation areas, and wildlife sanctuaries close by. For instance, Belair National Park offer some lovely trails for hiking as well as some more developed sections with playgrounds, picnic facilities, and the like. For an experience that's a bit wilder go to Cleland National Park, where you will find a large number of hiking trails of various levels of difficulty plus some great opportunities to experience the wildlife of Australia up close. You'll see emu, wallabies, kangaroos, koalas, Tasmanian Devils, Wombats, and more. You can even be photographed actually holding a koala, thanks to the supervision of nearby park officers and wildlife specialists.
A number of major airlines offer flights serving Adelaide International Airport, including Qantas, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, and Cathay Pacific. There are some direct flights from major cities in other countries, but many travellers choose to fly into a larger city such as Melbourne and Sydney and then connect with a domestic flight to Adelaide. Well known domestic carriers include Jetstar and Virgin Blue. Once you have arrived at the airport, there are buses and taxis readily available to take you into the city. Be sure to check with your hotel first, though, because many of them offer complimentary or very low cost shuttle service for their guests.
